Q. I've been getting flu shot for the last few years, but I'm not sure I really need one. Can you give me some guidelines?

A. The flu shot is recommended for anyone who is 65 or older or for anyone who has any of the following conditions: heart or kidney disease; chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, asthma or emphysema; chronic anemia; or severe diabetes. Plus, healthcare workers and anyone whose immune system is impaired should get the shot. If you fit into any of those categories, you should continue getting the vaccine.

Q. Ever since a severe tornado struck my dad's town, he hasn't been himself. He won't leave the house, turns down invitations and seems to have lost his sense of humor. Could there be a connection?

A. Absolutely. Your dad could be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD may strike a person who has been through any type of physical or emotional trauma. During the traumatic event, the person may have felt totally helpless, even fearing for his or her life. But after the danger is long gone, a person with PTSD suffers vivid flashbacks. As a result, people with PTSD may have trouble dealing with friends and family and may withdraw from once pleasurable activities. Medications and behavioral therapies can help lessen symptoms, so urge your dad to seek professional help.
